Do you enjoy reading poetry? I’d assume so, if you regularly read my newsletters. And if not, I have faith that you might learn to love it one of these days.
I truly believe that poetry is for everyone, and anyone can be a poet. Many of us have had the experience of finding a string of poetic words at certain moments, almost as if the words flow out of us from some source beyond us. Some of us are just more often consumed by this mad energy that forces us to scribble in our journals into the wee hours of the morning.
If you haven’t discovered a love for poetry yet, chances are you just haven’t found the right poems for you. There seems to be a mysterious synergy between writer and reader. It’s like the chemistry between people when they meet in person. It’s either there or it isn’t. And this kind of chemistry can sometimes change in the blink of an eye.
I remember when I was in high school, I had been friends with someone for quite a while. We’d spent time together in a group, and even occasionally just the two of us. We enjoyed each other’s company, but one day something shifted. There was this new energy between us — a lightning spark — and we went from being friends to dating each other.
Well, books can be like that too. There are books that I picked up and attempted to read several times without really feeling a connection, until one day I tried again and BAM, the book was suddenly amazing. Mesmerizing.
Is timing at the heart of this mystery, or is it something else entirely? I honestly don’t know, but it is an incredible feeling when you discover a book that seems to have been written just for you.
My own poetry chapbook, True North, might be just the sort of book you are looking for. It’s a book for those who are searching for their place in the world, for those who have found home, and for those who are seeking something beyond themselves.
It is free through Amazon in the USA and the UK from now until April 14, so download it to your Kindle or iphone (via the Kindle app) on Amazon while it’s still free. Many of you have already taken advantage of this free book promotion, for which I am so grateful. Support from you dear hearts made my book jump to #1 in poetry of specific places and #3 in women’s poetry! Thank you!
If you have read it, or plan to read it soon, I’d be grateful if you could leave a review. There are several reviews on Goodreads, but hardly any on Amazon. Reviews are one of the best ways you can help authors reach a wider audience. Thanks again, and happy reading.
What do you think about the kind of magic that happens between a writer and a reader? Have you had this experience? Share your thoughts in a comment.
What you've written about how some poetry connects with you and not other poetry chimes a bell with me. There are poems I read and think, Hmm, not sure about this, even though it's well-regarded. Others, I think wow, yes, I love this!
I'm looking forward to reading more in True North!
I've downloaded it! Looking forward to sitting with it and reading. Poetry is such a fascinating art form. It's more intense than a novel, like a song without music. Or rather, the words are the music.💕
